Tony Curtis

Tony Curtis (1925-    )
Tony Curtis is a good example of the Hollywood dream. As Bernard Schwartz, Curtis came out the Bronx, New York, and spent his early years in poverty and in trouble. But when he was introduced to the theatre, his future vocation was established - though not before he had served in the Navy in World War Two.

After the War, Curtis immersed himself in the acting craft - both studying and performing, and then he got lucky when being signed by Universal in 1949. The 1950s were to see Tony Curtis appear in a number of popular movies - 'Trapeze (1956)', 'Sweet Smell Of Success (1957)', 'The Vikings (1958)', 'The Defiant Ones (1958)' - for which he was Oscar nominated as runaway convict John 'Joker' Jackson, and 'Some Like It Hot (1959)', where he showed he was a dab hand at comedy.

In the 1960s, Curtis made a memorable impression as 'The Boston Strangler (1968)', and was one of the main stars in the immortal 'Spartacus (1960)'. He also used his charm to good effect in the popular 1970s TV adventure series 'The Persuaders!', starring opposite Roger Moore.
