The Butthole Surfers
were formed by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in San
Antonio, Texas in 1981. They've built up a notable
following, and are one of the most famous alternative/punk
bands. Their live shows are really an artistic event,
embracing film, lighting, and even naked dancers.
The band's line-up has
been fairly fluid, though longstanding members have been
bassist Jeff Pinkus, drummers King Coffey and Teresa
Taylor, with Haynes on vocals, and Leary on guitar. Mark
Kramer (Bongwater and Shimmy Disc) was also a bassist in
the band for a short time.
The band's music, whilst
containing the expected hardcore, is certainly not one
dimensional, and there's a psychedelic element - which is
apparent just from their album covers!
