How The Chicks Upset the American Right

A country band from Dallas, Texas is probably not the first place you'd think of for a rebellious band to hail from. But after a few decades of kicking against the right, in June 2020 this female trio changed their name from The Dixie Chicks to The Chicks.

Having spoken out against the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, The Chicks have never been scared of risking losing part of their core audience by refusing to stay silent on issues that matter. In the wake of the gruesome killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis by a police officer, a wave of protests across the world brought the issue of racism to the fore like never before.

Dixie has long been a nickname for the Southern states of the U.S. - and they formed the pro-slavery Confederate side during the US Civil War of the 1860s. From the removal of statues to names of buildings and streets under review, there is sweeping change happening across the globe and The Chicks have now committed themselves to moving on from a sad part of America's past.
