Sherlock Holmes, created by Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of the most famous characters in British literature, but Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was also an accomplished writer of historical novels and adventure stories such as 'The Lost World (1912)'. Edinburgh-born Conan Doyle was a man of many interests, and he became interested in Spiritualism after a series of personal tragedies, and dabbled in politics.
