The six-part BBC1 drama The Crimson Field was first shown in 2014, and was among a series of BBC TV and radio programmes marking the centenary of the First World War.

The Crimson Field revolves around nurses in a World War One field hospital in France. But, there is a lot more going on in the lives of the nurses than treating injured soldiers. All the nurses have secrets, which they are desperate to keep from their colleagues - and from anybody else. The need to keep these secrets also reflect the attitudes of the time.

Notably highlighted in The Crimson Field were the dreadful injuries (both physical and psychological) that impacted on World War One soldiers. The barbaric treatment of supposed deserters was also brought home to the viewer.
