Jane Fonda
Jane Fonda (1937- )
Coming out of the famous Fonda family - daughter of Henry, and sister of Peter, New York-born Jane Fonda dabbled in art and modelling, before legendary acting guru Lee Strasberg convinced her to go into acting.
Making her debut on Broadway and in films in 1960, in just over a decade Jane Fonda was winning a Best Actress Oscar for 'Klute (1971)'. She repeated the feat for 'Coming Home (1978)'. Both being gritty roles, which defined her career.
Despite playing the sexy Barbarella in 1968, Jane Fonda took time to feel confident about herself, but gradually grew into a strong woman, defending human rights, women's rights, and, of course, being a fierce critic of the Vietnam War. Obviously influenced by her father in a number of ways, it was apt that Jane should appear in his final film, for which Henry Fonda won a Best Actor Oscar - 'On Golden Pond (1981)'. Jane also earnt an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her performance in this film.
In recent years Jane Fonda has been highlighting the issue of climate change through Fire Drill Fridays, which she launched. Jane has been arrested many times at climate change demonstrations and has also made changes to her lifestyle reflecting her serious concerns about the climate crisis.
