Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas (1916-2020)
Kirk Douglas, real name Issur Danielovitch Demsky, was born in Amsterdam, New York on December 9th, 1916.

A gifted wrestler as a young man, Kirk Douglas gravitated towards acting, and went on to receive a scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Two classmates there were to have a pivotal influence on Douglas's life - Bermudan actress Diana Dill, who became his first wife in November 1943, and Betty Joan Perske, before she changed her name to Lauren Bacall.

Kirk Douglas served in the US Navy during World War II, from 1941 to the war's end in 1945. A year later, Lauren Bacall helped to launch the movie career of Kirk Douglas, when she recommended Douglas for the 1946 film, 'The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers'. Kirk Douglas was to go on and have a glittering career, and receive three Best Actor Oscar nominations - for 'Champion (1949)', 'The Bad And The Beautiful (1952)', and 'Lust For Life (1956)'. Douglas received an Honorary Academy Award - in 1996, with the citation being for his: "50 years as a moral and creative force in the motion picture community." Kirk Douglas also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and appeared in 'The Simpsons' in 1996 as Chester J. Lampwick.

Few actors have appeared in as many prestigious movies as Kirk Douglas, and as well as the aforementioned films, Douglas starred in 'Paths Of Glory', 'Ace In The Hole', 'Spartacus', and 'The Vikings'. Kirk Douglas was the father of actor and producer Michael Douglas, and had a notable involvement in defeating McCarthyism, when defending blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who had adapted Howard Fast's novel for 'Spartacus'.
