Laurence Olivier (1907-1989)
Just about the most revered British actor of the 20th Century, Laurence Olivier didn't get as many great film roles as his stage work merited. Due possibly because being acclaimed as a great actor was his motivation, and not being a great star.

Especially famous for his interpretations of Shakespeare - both on screen and on the stage, Olivier won a Best Actor Oscar in 1948 for 'Hamlet (1948)', though he is probably better known for 'Henry V (1944)' and 'Richard III (1955)' - as regards Shakespeare-inspired movies. He was also renowned for his stage King Lear.

Olivier put in many other memorable performances on screen, including in the films 'Wuthering Heights (1939)', 'Rebecca (1940)', 'Carrie (1952)', 'Spartacus (1960)', 'Sleuth (1972)', and 'Marathon Man (1976)'.

Also a respected director, Laurence Olivier was a great supporter of young actors, including the likes of Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins. Olivier also co-founded the National Theatre in London. He died on July 11th, 1989, aged 82.
