Write Dope on Pnuk part 45

Costume drama about the parliamentary process, doesn't sound promising, does it? That it is about William Wilberforce and the Abolition of the Slave Trade, makes it all sound very worthy. Actually, it is very good, with light touches that raise it from the turgor you might fear.

When it was being made I heard rumours that local light of the movement, Thomas Clarkson, was sidelined in the film. This is not the case, he is a major character with depth. It is sad that the same could not be said for Olaudah Equiano. Penguin have just published an extract from his journal ('Sold into Slavery'), which includes his stint in the Royal Navy during the Seven Years War, but stops before his part in the polar expedition of 1773. For more about him try either or hunt down a copy of 'The Interesting Narrative'. Though the book was originally published before he married Susannah Cullen of Soham in South Cambridgeshire.

Yes, a great film, with parallels with today (fairtrade products, civil liberties being lost during the war on terror, etc.) We all enjoyed it and learned at the same time.
