Donovan Brief Biography

Share

Donovan was the leading British folk singer/songwriter of the 1960s. Born in 1946, his real name was Donovan Philips Leitch, but, as simply Donovan, he began to find fame in his teens, with his catchy, but wistful, lyrics. Much was made, at the time, of the rivalry between the young Scot and Bob Dylan, but both men didn't take the press hype too seriously.

As his career evolved, Donovan's music became more expansive, and his songs could be psychedelic ('Hurdy Gurdy Man'), or just good pop ('Mellow Yellow'). At his peak, he was massively successful, topping the charts in the U.S., and having a notable number of top 10 singles in the U.K.
