Joan Baez - A Brief History
Joan Baez was a folk music star before future lover Bob Dylan, and with a voice of soaring sensitivity her moving vocals were ideal for promoting many ethical causes such as human rights and the environment. Born in Staten Island, New York, in 1941, Joan came from a compassionate family, and, due to her father's work, saw a lot of the world at a young age, including dreadful cruelty to people and animals in Iraq in the early 1950s - something which influenced her in later life. Appearing at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959 was when Joan Baez's career really kicked into gear - only three years after buying her first guitar. Joan was a leading light in the 1960s, both as a singer and activist, and it was only right that she performed at that legendary gathering of the counter culture clans of America - Woodstock. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
