1960s band Manfred Mann were named after their keyboard player (originally known as Mike Lubowitz), and if that wasn't rare enough, they also achieved the feat of having UK number one singles with two different singers - Paul Jones (on 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' (also a US number one) and 'Pretty Flamingo') and Mike d'Abo (on 'Mighty Quinn'). Manfred Mann formed Manfred Mann's Earth Band after the demise of The Manfreds in 1969.

Manfred Mann Astrological Profile

Born a Libran on 21st October, 1940 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the co-founder of Manfred Mann found success after moving to England in 1961. With his altruistic nature, and his innate desire to freely express himself, Mann left his native South Africa due to growing unhappiness with Apartheid policies and the lack of musical freedom. The Moon placed in Gemini, the sign of the twins, along with other influences, it's no surprise that his name has a dual function, also being the name of the group.

He is a sensitive, easily inspired, and intuitive person, who can easily express these qualities lyrically and through music. As a musician, he created an original, somewhat eccentric, yet captivating music for his group, Manfred Mann, which he performed passionately and with his natural charm. The group had success with many covers of popular songs, especially Bob Dylan songs. Mann's keen ability to copy and imitate, especially musically, contributed to the quality of these recordings.

During the growing environmental movement of the late 1960s/early 1970s, he formed the progressive rock band Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1971. Here he could freely express his inherent concern for the earth and its inhabitants through music and his broad philosophical outlook. As someone with unconventional and unusual ideas, the group gave away a piece of unspoilt Welsh countryside to everybody who purchased their 1974 album, The Good Earth.
