THE CANTERBURY SCENE

Share

Canterbury is one of the most important Christian cities in the world, but, in the 1960s, it was home to a thriving music scene.

Beginning with the Wilde Flowers, the Canterbury Scene saw the emergence of a number of interesting combos such as Caravan and Soft Machine.

The Canterbury Scene didn't spawn groups that had great commercial success in the UK, which, considering the experimental nature of the music of Soft Machine in particular, was unsurprising. The Canterbury Scene was still hugely influential however.
