'Sneaky' Pete Kleinow Obituary
Written by Paul Rance
Wednesday, 10 January 2007
Renowned steel guitarist and Emmy winning special effects man, Pete Kleinow, better known as 'Sneaky' Pete, passed away on January 6th in California. Born in South Bend, Indiana, on August 20th, 1934, Kleinow was also a respected songwriter.
Kleinow's career in the entertainment industry began as a special effects artist, working on some notable projects including the 1960s sci-fi TV show 'The Outer Limits' and the movie 'The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm (1962)'. An interest in country-rock, and playing the pedal steel guitar, led to Kleinow meeting Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons of The Byrds, and the trio were later to form The Flying Burrito Brothers - who are still recognised as one of the all-time great country-rock groups. Kleinow's innovative guitar work, incorporating fuzzbox experiments and backwards guitar sounds, influenced the likes of Jerry Garcia.

When he returned to special effects in 1981, Pete Kleinow worked on hit films 'Gremlins (1984)', 'The Terminator (1984)', and 'Terminator 2 (1991)', while still continuing to work as a musician. He won an Emmy in 1983, for his special effects work on the TV series 'The Winds Of War'.
