Richie Havens was a black New Yorker, whose biggest claim to fame was opening the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969. Coming out of the same Greenwich folk scene as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, Havens never thought of material wealth as the key to happiness, and his lively and intense guitar playing and singing showed an integrity and humanity which was wonderful. Richie died of a heart attack on April 22nd, 2013 at the age of 72.
