Arthur C. Clarke Obituary

Born in Minehead, Somerset, England, Arthur C. (Charles) Clarke, (December 16th, 1917-March 19th, 2008) was one of the greatest figures in science fiction literature, but he will also be remembered as an inventor and futuristic seer - he put forward the idea of satellite communication as early as 1945. He was also a champion of the lowland gorilla, and won the UNESCO-Kalinga Prize in 1962.

In popular culture, Clarke is best known for his novel '2001: A Space Odyssey' being adapted into the groundbreaking 1968 film of the same name, and for presenting popular 1980s TV programmes, 'Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World' and 'Arthur C. Clarke's World of Strange Powers'.

Mostly wheelchair-bound after contracting polio in 1959, Arthur C. Clarke died of respiratory problems - in his beloved Sri Lanka, where he had lived since 1956.
