| Tony Bennett was born
Anthony Dominick Benedetto on August 3rd, 1926, in
Astoria, Queens in New York City, and is one of the most
respected singers in the history of popular music. Respected for his humanitarian values, as much as his vocal talents, Tony Bennett has recorded pop classics such as 'Stranger In Paradise', 'The Good Life', 'If I Ruled The World', and, of course, 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco'. Bennett survived World War II, as an infrantyman, and, reflecting on his experiences, once said: "Anybody who thinks that war is romantic obviously hasn't gone through one." Tony Bennett has been a long-time supporter of the American Civil Rights movement, and participated in the legendary Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965. He also refused to sing in South Africa during the apartheid era. Though being most famous as a singer, Tony Bennett is an accomplished painter, and his work has been widely exhibited. Tony Bennett's music has also attracted a young and enthusiastic audience in the last 20 years, and, in both his art and his music, his enthusiasm shows no sign of waning. - Paul Rance, Peace & Freedom Press. |
