Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - Biography and The Song Of Hiawatha: Part 1, Chapter 1

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an American poet who was famous for writing 'Hiawatha'. Longfellow's other notable works were 'The Golden Legend', 'Paul Revere's Ride', and 'Evangeline'. He was also responsible for writing the first American translation of the great Italian poet Dante's 'Divine Comedy', and Longfellow is also widely recognized as one of the first great American poets.

Longfellow was one of five poets from New England who were known as the Fireside Poets. The others being William Cullen Bryant, James Russell Lowell, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. This group began to bring American poetry into the mainstream in the US, thus challenging the popularity of British poetry.
