Elvis Presley was probably the greatest male icon of the 20th Century. Though not the inventor of rock 'n' roll, he was really the catalyst for its popularity from 1955 onwards, with his legendary songs, 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Jailhouse Rock', and 'Hound Dog'. With good looks, charm, and an overtly sexual stage act, plus talent in spades, he was always going to make quite an impression, whether it being the King of Rock and Roll to the young, or someone more dangerous to their parents. On joining the Army in the early 1960s, even the older generation were finally won over, though it's been argued his music lost its verve from then on. That said, the Elvis songs of the late '60s had a greater depth and quality, and 'Suspicious Minds' and 'In The Ghetto' have gained in popularity over the years - even at the expense of his older recordings.
