The Beatles

'Beatles For Sale' Album Cover

Without doubt The Beatles remain the greatest group in rock and pop history.

Honing their musicianship in Hamburg and Liverpool, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison had already built up a sizeable following before drummer Ringo Starr joined in 1962.

A combination of concentrating on writing their own songs, a rapid maturity, and an inventive producer in George Martin saw The Beatles come a long way in a few years. They went from covering rock 'n' roll standards and writing teenage love songs such as 'She Loves You' and 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' in 1963, to 'In My Life', 'Yesterday', and 'Eleanor Rigby' by the mid-1960s.

The Beatles, with Martin's encouragement, were constantly experimenting in the studio. George Harrison was embracing Indian and electronic music, John Lennon was involved in the surreal and psychedelic, Paul McCartney dabbled in the avant-garde, heavy rock, and old style Music Hall. With Ringo Starr's pleasant, childlike contributions, and the group melding rock, pop, folk, soul, blues, R&B, rock 'n' roll, and even country and classical, The Beatles had something for everyone.
