The Rutles

Share

The Beatles were just one group who were massively influenced by The Rutles, though some cynics say it was the other way round. However, if you study specific Rutles songs you can see that The Beatles were inspired to write very similar songs. But I can't think of any off the top of my head for legal reasons...

Goose Step Mama obviously references the time The Rutles spent honing their craft in Germany, while the title is an affectionate nod at the Nazis. It would be hard to disagree that The Beatles may well have decided to follow the same path because they loved The Rutles so much.

Rutles drummer Barry Wom once stated that he fancied a go at getting into hairdressing. Beatles drummer Ringo Starr also fancied a go at that too - if The Beatles hadn't gone much past the mid-1960s. Like John Lennon, acerbic Rutles frontman Ron Nasty also had an interesting girlfriend. While George Harrison was almost as mystical as Stig O'Hara, and Paul McCartney had a better hairstyle than Dirk McQuickly, who went on to form The Punk Floyd. So, there we have it. The Rutles are the most influential band to ever have come out of Rutland.
