DAVID BOWIE - ALADDIN SANE 'Watch That Man' is a lively, danceable beginning to the album which gave us the character that followed Ziggy Stardust - Aladdin Sane. The title song, 'Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)', is well crafted, and Mike Garson plays a mean piano on this track. 'Drive-In Saturday' is pleasant enough, with some fun, and presumably fictional, references. While 'Panic In Detroit' is a Bowie classic with pulp fiction lyrics. 'Cracked Actor' is hard-edged, with some pretty explicit lyrics, though possibly misunderstood back then! Side 2 opens with the burlesque 'Time' - again not shying away from the explicit. 'The Prettiest Star' is a sweet ballad, which Bowie was producing in plentiful supply in the early to mid 1970s. A blistering, fun version of Jagger and Richards 'Let's Spend The Night Together' follows. The penultimate track, 'The Jean Genie', is another Bowie classic, with its enchanting and silly lyrics, and its hypnotising, thudding beat. Ending things is 'Lady Grinning Soul' - arguably David Bowie's most underrated song. A thing of beauty to be sure - both lyrically and musically, especially the rippling piano. The cover of 'Aladdin Sane' is probably the most famous David Bowie album cover, and the album itself comfortably fits into the classic category. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com.
