YELLOW SUBMARINE
Underrated British animated film, featuring cartoon Beatles, though with voices by actors: John - John Clive; Paul - Geoffrey Hughes; George - Peter Batten; Ringo - Paul Angelis. The Blue Meanies are horrid, and the Nowhere Man sequence is simply moving (character voiced by Brit comedy legend Dick Emery), and George Martin's inspired score blends in beautifully with the Fab Four's own songs. It's imaginatively put together and has grown in stature as a film per se, over the years, rather than just as a vehicle for The Beatles music. The Beatles only appear in person right at the end. Written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn, and Erich Segal. George Duning directed. The featured Beatles music was as follows: Yellow Submarine; Eleanor Rigby; All Together Now; When I'm 64; Only A Northern Song; With A Little Help From My Friends; Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds; Nowhere Man; All You Need Is Love; It's All Too Much; Hey Bulldog. The 'Yellow Submarine' album, first released in December '68, featured two very psychedelic and very good George Harrison songs, 'It's All Too Much' and 'Only A Northern Song', the catchy 'All Together Now', the punchy, cheeky 'Hey Bulldog', and two of The Beatles most enduring songs, the cheerful 'Yellow Submarine', and that most optimistic of songs, 'All You Need Is Love'. George Martin's orchestral music fills up the whole of Side 2. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |

Customer Review: Some might say Dirk, Stig, Barry, and the notorious Nasty were better than The Beatles. I wouldn't, but they were pretty close, with songs of lilting melody and profound lyrical content. - Paul Rance. |
