FIONA SNELSON (Editor) - THE NSPCC BOOK OF FAMOUS FAUX PAS The great thing about libraries is that you often come across interesting books by accident. Looking for some rock music and film reference books, I found this little gem sandwiched between Cliff Richard and Johnny Rotten! 'Famous Faux Pas' is a wonderful collection of anecdotes, compiled by Fiona Snelson for one of Britain's leading children's charities, and it includes an incongruous mix of celebrities not hiding their blushes. Favourites in here include the famously tactless Jim Bowen remark, and tales from Ludovic Kennedy, Roy Hudd, Patrick Moore, Julie Walters, and Geoff Capes. Not many rock stars to be seen, but then they would take up a book each, I suppose! There's also a moving introduction by Ms. Snelson regarding how fortunate she was to have a happy childhood, and some children not being so fortunate. Being bullied at school certainly damaged me to an extent, but I was lucky to have a loving father who swiftly dealt with the bullies. A lot of children suffer in silence, at school or at home, and that's where the NSPCC come in. It's a book that is ideal to dip into on a long journey on public transport, and it's sad there haven't been any reprints recently, and it's hard to get hold of now. This book was originally published in 1990, when the obsession with celebrities doing anything was a long way off. Now, it'd surely sell like hot cakes. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
