BEREAVEMENT

She cannot sleep
and rises even earlier than lately.
In the garden
In the greenhouse
she plucks off withered leaves.

She kicks a bag of compost,
takes her cigarettes from her pocket
and lights one
to pollute the earth-sweet air.
Her blood surges,
stretching vessels dangerously.
She has had a headache for days.

LANDOWNER

There is no point from which he can see all of his land,
his eighty-thousand acres.
He hired a helicopter once
buy it couldn't reveal each crooked burn and crag,
each ben and sheltered loch,
each crease and fold.
Not in one gaze.

He knows if he could stretch it out, pull it taut,
his land would cover all of Britain;
hang off the sides like an ironed table cloth.

WINTER KITTEN

Black and white acrylic fur
You'd have worn your white bikini all year round
if you could

Snow-dipped paws and blackberry pads
as pink as your rasping tongue

Winter kitten
You walked on top of doors
Walked in front of cars

Perpetual kitten
