Toclafane Invasion
The sky splits open as the Toclafane move in!

We at last get to see the Master in 'Doctor Who' again, in this, effectively, three part climax to series 3. As a boy, Roger Delgado as the Master seemed more scary to me than the Daleks, Cybermen, and Sea Devils combined! In the updated series here, we get two Masters for the price of one, with Derek Jacobi and John Simm.

Jacobi appears as the seemingly avuncular Professor Yana, who is living a fairly lonely existence 100 trillion years into the future, at the edge of the universe, though he does have his devoted female insectoid companion Chantho (Chipo Chung). Professor Yana is trying to save what is left of humanity, while battling against the rampaging humanoid mutants the Futurekind. Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) also returns to the series, in typically flamboyant syle - hanging onto the Tardis as it hurtles towards the end of the universe, and he's soon back to normal, flirting with anything, and bitching with the Doctor.

Professor Yana, it turns out, is a Time Lord
, and has an irritating condition of hearing a drumbeat constantly inside his head. This call to war isn't surprising, as Yana tells Chantho he is the Master. He kills her, but she shoots him, and he staggers into the Tardis, locking the Doctor out, as he regenerates, and heads for Earth as a younger, more manic Master.

John Simm's Master is hyper, and smiles as he kills, and when the Doctor, Martha, and Jack manage to return to Earth, the Master is using the name Harold Saxon, and has an attractive, but strange, wife Lucy, AND possesses a laser screwdriver! He is also comfortably ensconced in a powerful position - as the British Prime Minister! The Master also has billions of small but lethal mechanical killers at his disposal, who he calls the Toclafane. What follows, is 'Doctor Who' at its best, as the Master goes berserk. The US President, Martha's parents, Captain Jack, and even the Doctor, suffer at his hands. The sky is torn open, and the Toclafane pour in, with Martha being the Earth's main hope.

The ending is a bit unexpected, and a bit disappointing, but series 3 has been the best so far.
