MIDNIGHT COWBOY
A bleak film, but beautifully made. Directed by John Schlesinger with outstanding performances from Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. A worthy winner of the Oscar for Best Film. Voight plays the rather thick and shallow Texan, Joe Buck, who visits New York, and uses his boyish charms to extract money out of sad older ladies. He pals up with Ratso, one of the most heart-rending characters in cinema history, and Dustin Hoffman's portrayal probably should have won him the Best Actor Oscar for 1969 - but the sentimental vote went for John Wayne's admittedly excellent performance in 'True Grit'. Hoffman and Voight had to settle for Best Actor nominations, together with Sylvia Miles who played Cass. John Schlesinger won an Oscar for Best Director, with Waldo Salt winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Harry Nilsson's 'Everybody's Talkin'' brings some relief to this tale of two sad drifters, who seem to care about each other, but are struggling to find fulfilment and happiness. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
