MOULIN ROUGE
Suspend your belief for just over two hours, as this film set in 1900 Paris, serves up a marvellous collection of great songs of the 20th Century. You can have fun with a pen or pencil noting all the songs as they come along thick and fast! Playing his role with mesmerising sensitivity, Ewan McGregor is the penniless writer, Christian, who falls for the beautiful courtesan Satine, played, in turns, impishly and tenderly, by Nicole Kidman. It's a double act, which proves that chemistry still matters in movies, and they both prove they can sing like birds, too. Probably the best musical since 'Oliver'. Vulnerable performances from Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, in a bewildering soundscape of outstanding 20th Century music. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
