West Side Story
West Side Story

Enjoyable and sad at the same time, though the choreographed fight scenes are a bit silly. It's a film with truly classic songs, such as 'America', and a good message, but I don't think we've moved on much regarding racial tolerance.

'West Side Story' revolves around both gang culture, in this instance the violent rivalry between American gang The Jets and Puerto Rican gang The Sharks, and a love affair which tries to break through the racial divide.

Natalie Wood is at her most beguiling as a girl who tries to bridge the divide - amidst all the macho postering.

'West Side Story' won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, and Best Supporting awards for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Anita.
