THE ELEPHANT MAN
'The Elephant Man' was certainly one of the most moving of all movies. John Hurt plays the tragic John Merrick with heart-rending pathos, and he was among 8 Oscar nominations for this film. Hurt being nominated for Best Actor. Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Frederick Treves befriends the deformed John, rescuing him from a freak show in Victorian England. Treves thus lifts himself above the uncaring mob, and proves that there can be a beacon of light for a man in despair. Anne Bancroft also puts in a warm performance as Mrs. Kendal. The other nominations for this movie were for Best Film; David Lynch for Best Director; Christopher De Vore, Eric Bergren, and David Lynch for Best Screenplay; Ann V. Coates for Best Film Editing; Stuart Craig, Robert Cartwright, and Hugh Scaife for Best Art Direction; John Morris for Best Music; Patricia Norris for Best Costume Design. Remarkably, this film actually won no Oscars at all. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
