THE ELEPHANT MAN Certainly one of the most moving of all movies. John Hurt plays the tragic John Merrick with heart-rending pathos, and was among 8 Oscar nominations for this film, Hurt being nominated for Best Actor. Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Frederick Treves befriends the deformed John, rescuing him from a freak show in Victorian England. Treves thus lifts himself above the uncaring mob, and proves that there can be a beacon of light for a man in despair. Anne Bancroft also puts in a warm performance as Mrs. Kendal. The other nominations for this film were for Best Film; David Lynch as Best Director; Christopher de Vere, Eric Bergren, and David Lynch for Best Screenplay; Ann V. Coates for Best Editing; Stuart Craig, Bob Cartwright, and Hugh Scaife for Best Art Direction; John Morris for Best Music; Patricia Norris for Best Costume Design. Remarkably, this film actually won no Oscars at all. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
